Bio

Where I’m From

I’m from Newark, New Jersey, and

Dodge County, Georgia,

the RAFB hospital, and

Johns Road on the north side of town.

I’m from Northside’s JROTC,

Macon Jr.’s School of Business, and

Georgia College’s College of Education.

I’m from Alonzo Perkins and Dewey Brookins,

from Jacob Plagge and Fred Piceno.

I’m from lost loves Scott and Richard, and

lost pets Pokey and Lightnin’.

I’m from 100-yard dashes and softball throws,

tumbling routines and gymnastics injuries,

rec ball and church league.

...from Parkwood’s Talent Shows,

Lake Tobo’s Day Camp, and

Green Acres’ Vacation Bible School.

...from 50’s records to 80’s cassettes to Golden Oldies CDs.

...from Lane’s peaches, White Diamond barbecue, and Hardy Farms boiled peanuts.

...from freshly-laundered sheets, squeaky-clean dishes, and recently-vacuumed floors.

...from hard-working student to harder-working teacher,

...from overlooked wife to cherished mom, and

...from soul-searcher to “sheep” finder.

...from mistakes so great and privileges so undeserved

that they’ve both humbled and exalted me.

Treasured in drawers and boxes and chests are the relics

of my loved ones never met…

too soon departed…

growing too quickly…

I’m from a smidgeon of this and a tad of that,

from a heap of these and a mountain of those.

From ingredients continuously added, sifted, and removed.

Fashioned from these, I’m uniquely me.
